Johnstone Burgh extended their unbeaten run in the league to seven matches with a 2-1 victory at Troon this afternoon.
After a pretty non-eventful first half, both teams came out for the second half with much improved performances. Burgh made two changes at half time, with captain Del Esplin coming off the bench for Graham Dorrans, and Trialist replacing Aiden Gilmartin.
Johnstone Burgh had the first big chance of the half, when the referee awarded the visitors a penalty after the ball had, allegedly, struck the arm of a Troon defender. After a small delay due to the protests by the home side, Ross Smith stepped up in the 53rd minute to take the spot kick. Smith went to the keeper's bottom right and Dale Burgess guessed correctly, making a good save.
The save will have been seen by the home team as justice being served, and seemed to spur them on as they took the lead 10 minutes later. A move down the left wing saw Sam Jamieson fire the ball across the goal to Dario Viviani, who turned it in.
However, going behind didn't faze The Burgh as Fraser Mullen's free kick was met by the head of Trialist, who found the net just three minutes later.
Burgh were in the ascendancy now, and Trialist was involved in the 73rd minute. He chested the ball under control before being brought down by Steven Bronsky. All heads turned to the referee and both sides, momentarily paused as Troon screamed for handball against Trialist, whilst Burgh appealed for a penalty for the trip on him, but as Kieran O'Reilly waved away the protests from both sides, Max Kerr remained alert and ran on the loose ball, striking it first time and slotted it past Burgess at his near post as he scored for the fourth consecutive match.
With Burgh in the lead, Troon battled hard to find a way back into it. And although they put us under a lot of pressure as time ran out, our defence remained strong and they couldn't find the equaliser they were searching for, and Burgh held on to claim all three points.
Thank you for your incredible support today. Today's result sees us remaining 2nd in the table, but we close the gap to Clydebank who could only manage a draw against St Cadocs today. We now sit four points behind them.
Next week, we welcome Gartcairn to Keanie Park. Kick off is at 2pm. We look forward to welcoming you then.
