Johnstone Burgh 9-3 Knightswood

Hat tricks from Jojo Gillespie & Ally Small, plus a brace from Kieran Brophy and a goal from Jason Naismith gave Burgh a convincing victory over fourth division Knightswood.

With three divisions between the two sides, Burgh came into the game heavy favourites. Jamie McKim made a number of changes to the Burgh starting line-up, and it took a little time for the hosts to click. The first real chance came in the 14th minute when Ross McKenzie was played through by Jojo Gillespie and found himself one on one. Hitting his effort across the goal, the visiting keeper made a good save to deny the Burgh midfielder.

Four minutes later, Burgh really should've opened the scoring after Gillespie did brilliantly to keep the ball in and cut it back to Ally Small who saw his shot squirm underneath the keeper. The keeper was quick to his feet and pounced on the loose ball ahead of Brophy.

In the 24th minute, Gillespie played a through ball to Brophy. The keeper raced out of his box and made a good sliding tackle and won the ball. The ball fell to Malky McDonald, and the keeper chased McDonald and made another sliding tackle and won the ball again. The ball found its way to the left wing where it found Brophy, whose shot from around 25 yards bounced into the empty net.

Burgh's lead lasted only four minutes before Knightswood equalised. A free kick near the corner flag was crossed in low, and Del Esplin lunged at the ball to make the clearance but, inadvertently, turned it past Jamie McGowan and into his own net.

Knightswood's joy was short-lived, as three minutes later, Burgh were ahead again. Gary McCann, who'd come on as a substitute to replace the injured Dom Boland, fired in a low cross from the right side and Gillespie ran onto it, and struck it first time into the bottom corner.

Four minutes before half time, Burgh were awarded a penalty. Knightswood debated both the foul and the location of it, claiming that the tackle was outside the box. Although the Knightswood defender lunged into the tackle from behind outside the box, momentum carried him into the box, where the contact was made with Ally Small. Gillespie stepped up, and sent the keeper the wrong way to convert from the spot.

In the second minute of added time, Burgh added a fourth. The ball was worked to Small, who controlled it well then fired his shot, low and hard. It looked as though the keeper would make the save but, somehow, it seemed to go through the keeper's body and into the net.

Half time: 4-1

Burgh looked to start the second half the same way they finished first and with six minutes on the clock in the second half, they almost got a fifth as Ross McKenzie forced the Knightswood keeper into a good save low down at the near post. A minute later, Gillespie looked to get his hat trick as he cut inside onto his right foot but his shot from the edge of the box was saved by the keeper. 10 minutes into the second half, Gary McCann should've made it 5-1 after Small played a lovely throughball but the keeper was quick off his line to block McCann's shot on the edge of the box. Three minutes later, Brophy crossed in from the right and the ball was knocked down to Small who's rocket of a volley was blocked by the Knightswood defender.

On the hour mark, Burgh finally got their fifth goal. Brophy raced through one on one and kept his composure to stroke the ball across the keeper into the bottom corner.

118 seconds later, Gillespie made it six, and completed his hat trick. McKenzie with the throughball and Gillespie ran onto it then bent his effort around the keeper into the bottom corner at the far post.

Goals were coming thick and fast, and this time it was Knightswood, scoring their second with a superb long range effort that beat McGowan in the Burgh goal.

Midway through the second half, youngster Brodie O'Neill cut it back to Ally Small who turned and curled a beautiful effort into the far post, giving the keeper no chance.

A minute later, Knightswood were awarded a penalty but it was blazed over the bar.

With 13 minutes left, Ally Small completed his hat trick as he outmuscled his man and coolly slotted home.

A minute later, Gary McCann's cross-cum-shot looked as though it might dip in but bounced off the top of the bar and behind for a goal kick.

With three minutes to play, Jason Naismith added his name to the scoresheet as Gary McCann's outswinging corner was glanced on by the Burgh defender, through the keeper's legs and into the net.

In the 90th minute, Knightswood grabbed a third as the number 19 struck an effort towards the near post. McGowan made the save but the rebound looped up to the Knightswood number 9 to head from close range into the empty net.
