Johnstone Burgh 3-2 Ashfield

Conner McGlinchey and substitutes Ross McKenzie and Ally Small all scored in the second half to give The Burgh a massive three points against Ashfield.

Caretaker manager Tommy Montgomery kept the same Starting XI that started Wednesday night’s 6-1 victory over Cambuslang Rangers.

The first real chance came in the seventh minute, as Kieran Brophy struck across the goal from just inside the box, but former Burgh keeper Glen Cameron made the save.

In the 26th minute, Brophy found the net. A Graham Dorrans shot from the edge of the D was deflected into the air. Dale Simeon headed on to Brophy, who put it into the net but it was disallowed for offside.

Seven minutes later, Brophy almost got his name on the scoresheet, after centre-back Craig Menzies burst forward and played it wide to Conner McGlinchey. His first-time cross found Brophy, who volleyed it side-footed, but Cameron made himself big and made the save from point-blank range.

It was a fairly even first half, with Burgh having the better chances.

Half time: 0-0

Burgh started the second half with intent, and in the sixth minute, Jonny Lyons was able to run from midfield, unchallenged, and struck from 25 yards but Cameron made a good save to deny the Burgh midfielder.

The deadlock was broken in the 61st minute when Conner McGlinchey’s rocket flew past Glen Cameron as he netted for the first time in Burgh colours.

Six minutes later, Brophy again came close to grabbing a goal as he received Lyons’ pass and cut in on his right foot and looked to bend it around the former Burgh keeper but Cameron, again, denied him.

The goal seemed to give Burgh a boost and they ramped up the pressure, looking to double their lead. In the 70th minute, Ross McKenzie came close as his 20-yard left-footed strike beat Glen Cameron but rebounded back off the post.

Burgh had a penalty shout a minute later after Stuart McCann was clipped by Granger, but the referee waved play on.

In the 72nd minute, a pass back to Cameron did not have nearly enough power on it to reach the keeper, and Ally Small was quick as a flash to pounce on the loose ball. He tried to poke it around the keeper, but Cameron made a great save. The rebound fell back to Ally Small who fired into the empty net to make it 2-0.

Three minutes later, the game was seemingly over, as Gary McCann’s reverse throughball found Ross McKenzie. The substitute ran onto it and, first time, slotted it past Cameron to give Burgh a 3-0 lead.

With four minutes left another substitute, Blair Rossiter, came close to finding the net but his 25 yard effort was palmed away by Cameron.

Ashfield went down the pitch and found a way back into the game. Black worked it wide to Barr, who struck it past Kenzie Smyth to deny the Burgh keeper his clean sheet.

In the 90th minute, a long ball forward saw a footrace between Smyth and Ashfield substitute Slaven. The Ashfield man won it and lifted the ball over the Burgh keeper for 3-2 to make Burgh sweat through added time.

Burgh managed to hold on and claimed victory over one of their promotion rivals.
