Johnstone Burgh 2-1 Glenafton Athletic

Max Kerr's Free Kick Gives The Burgh The Lead

After three months of away games and postponements, Johnstone Burgh enjoyed their long-awaited return to Keanie Park with a 2-1 victory over Glenafton Athletic.

Apart from a very early chance for Ross Smith, one of three making their home debuts today, it was a fairly quiet opening 20 or so minutes.

On 25 minutes, Burgh were awarded a free kick about 25 yards out when Smith was pulled back by Jared Willet, who was booked for the offence. Max Kerr curled the free kick beautifully over the wall and into the net off the inside of the post, giving Glens keeper David Markey no chance.

Having taken the lead, Burgh started to take control and pressed for another. We didn't have to wait long, just two minutes in fact. A nice Burgh move was finished off with Smith laying it off to Aaron Mason, who struck it first time from the edge of the box and into the net.

Four minutes later, we had the ball in the net again. A long ball over the top was met by another home-debutant Aiden Gilmartin, who controlled it and finished well but the linesman had raised his flag for offside.

Burgh continued to create chances with Graham Dorrans, Smith and Mason all firing wide, and Markey making a good save from Gilmartin who was one on one.

Half Time: 2-0

The second half started the same way the first half ended, with Burgh well on top. Mason and Gilmartin both forced Markey into making saves. An Aaron Mason cross was controlled by Gilmartin but, as he was about to shoot, Markey was able to clear the ball away.

Kerr had a shot blocked before Mason fired wide. Then Gilmartin forced another save from Markey, before striking wide a few minutes later.

Around the midway point of the second half, Dorrans was tripped by Ross Lindsay about 30 yards from goal. Ross Davidson, also making his home debut this afternoon, struck it well but Markey managed to scramble across his goal to push it out for a corner.

Mason inadvertently almost got Burgh a third when he was one on one, and as Markey raced out to close him down, the ball cannoned back off Mason and trickled just wide.

With time running out, The Glens searched for a way back into the game. They did manage to find a late goal, when Hugh Kerr headed in Mason McDougall's cross. But, with the game already into added time, it was too little too late for the visitors, and we took a much-deserved three points.

Full Time: 2-1
