Johnstone Burgh won 2-1 for the fourth consecutive time in the league this afternoon as they extended their unbeaten league run to eight games. The visitors were Gartcairn, a side with plenty of familiar faces in their squad. Bryan Wharton, Jordan Moore and Jonny Lyon all started, whilst Dale Simeon featured on the bench.
Burgh started brightly, putting the visitors under early some pressure. However, we struggled to really create anything. The game's first shot on target came in the 20th minute when stand-in left back Alan Cook stung the palms of Cairn keeper Charlie Cowie.
The visitors played most of the first half on the back foot, only venturing forward on the occasional counter attack. They had to wait until the 33rd minute for their first shot on target and, from their point of view, it was worth the wait. It was another breakaway, as they raced forward down the middle. The ball was deflected wide to former Burgh striker Jordan Moore, who clipped it back into the box to find Robert Thomson who volleyed it past Luke Scullion's near post to give the visitors the lead.
The second half started with more intensity from the hosts as we tried to find the leveller. Although the pressure was more intense, and we were creating chances, we still weren't challenging Cowie. The Burgh had a glorious chance around the midway point of the half when the ball pinballed around the Cairn box and fell to substitute Aiden Gilmartin who looked certain to net his first Burgh goal, but Cowie denied him at point blank range.
The Cairn weathered that storm and, with 16 minutes to go, came agonisingly close to securing the three points when Bryan Wharton's header hit the bar before Ross Caldwell forced an excellent save from Luke Scullion on the rebound.
As the full time whistle approached, Burgh upped the intensity as they searched to rescue a point. And in the 89th minute, the pressure finally paid off. Graham Dorrans, making his final appearance for Johnstone Burgh, pinged a long ball forward from the halfway line. He found Kyle Lafferty, who flicked it onto Max Kerr. Kerr headed it on to Gilmartin, who scuffed his shot, which was heading wide. However, new signing Allan MacKenzie, intercepted the shot and laid it off to Lafferty who drilled it into the net.
Although the Burgh fans were probably happy to have snatched a point, the team were not content to settle for the draw. Just 58 seconds after Lafferty's goal, Burgh turned one point into three, when Scullion's deep clearance was met by Lafferty. The Northern-Irishman nodded it down to Darren Christie, who played a one-two with MacKenzie, which resulted in Christie nutmegging Cowie to put The Burgh ahead and give us the win.
