Interview: Tommy Montgomery Previews Arthurlie Clash

Ahead of our Scottish Junior Cup Semi Final First Leg on Sunday, Johnstone Burgh manager Tommy Montgomery spoke to the media team at www.johnstoneburghfc.com.

It's been a whirlwind few weeks seeing the manager leaving his role, as well as several coaches, then playing weekends and midweek. Since you've taken charge of the team, we're unbeaten having won two and drawn one. What's the mood like amongst the squad?
The mood amongst the squad is good. The boys feel that there has been a wee momentum shift and are looking forward to the upcoming challenges.

Being down several coaches, has that, combined with games coming thick and fast, had an impact on our preparations in terms of scouting the opposition? Or is it a case of focusing on our own game plan and not worrying about what the opposition might do?
It's a bit of both, we have been fortunate with games being off allowing us to watch Arthurlie a few times over that period. However, we also feel that, with the quality in our squad, if we can play to our strengths then we can come away with a positive result.

Speaking of the opposition, Bryan Wharton, Dylan Fletcher and Graham Black may feel they have a point to prove against us, after their spells at The Burgh were cut short. Is that something we focus on, or do we ignore individual players and concentrate on stopping them as a team?
Bryan, Dylan and big Graham are all there. They are good players, that's why we had them at the club. I don't think they have anything to prove. We'll concentrate on our own game.

This is the biggest tie the club has faced in over 20 years. Are you using that to hype up the players for the occasion, or are you trying to play it down and treat as just another game?
I don't think the players need hyped up, it's a big occasion, and they are experienced players. It will be about channelling those high motivational levels in the right manner.

Do you feel going into the game with the slight underdog tag benefits the players and helps take a bit of pressure off them?
I think in this type of tie, it's about what you bring on the day. We haven't giving a minute's thought to the fact we would be considered slight underdogs.

Would you prefer a one off semi final and what problems or advantages does the 2 legs bring?
My personal preference is for a one off tie. I think when it's over two legs, the first game is usually a cagey affair.
Hopefully we can have an exciting 2nd leg at Keanie next week.

We've seen players returning from injuries in recent weeks, Ryan Wallace, Kyle Lafferty etc. That must be a huge boost, given that we'll have a few players cup tied for the semi finals?
Yeah the cup tied players situation does cause some disruption but, as you say, players coming back from injury and suspension comes at a good time and will allow us to go into the game with a strong squad.
